Speech Starts HEAR, LLC offers professional auditory, speech, and language therapy by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist.
While we treat individuals with a variety of speech and language disorders, we specialize in working with individuals of all ages with hearing loss and/or hearing related disorders.
The owner and practicing clinician of Speech Starts HEAR, Melanie Abramowitz, is a certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist in Auditory Verbal Therapy and is also trained in American Sign Language. Speech Starts HEAR has the unique ability to provide services utilizing a listening and spoken language communication approach and a total communication approach (spoken language and sign language). Our philosophy is that there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to choosing a communication option for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Speech Starts HEAR believes families should be well informed of all communication options when making a decision for what is best for their family. With expertise in both auditory verbal therapy and American Sign Language, Speech Starts HEAR is prepared to meet the needs of all families regardless of their preferred method of communication.
Our program focuses on increasing an individual's auditory, speech, and language skills by creating optimal listening and language rich environments through caregiver coaching and use of auditory-verbal strategies and techniques.
Speech Starts HEAR provides mentoring services for professionals seeking their Listening and Spoken Language Specialist certification through the Alexander Graham Bell Academy.
We offer family-centered in-home therapy, virtual therapy services via tele-practice, evaluations, and remote mentoring.
We are based in Philadelphia, PA and offer in-home services to the Greater Philadelphia area, surrounding suburbs, and parts of New Jersey.
Remote services are offered in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California.
Speech Starts HEAR offers individual 30 minute, 45 minute, or 1 hour auditory, speech, language, and/or literacy therapy sessions in the comfort of the client's own home. Therapy sessions for children involve caregiver coaching and incorporate play-based therapy in the child's natural environment.
Auditory-verbal therapy sessions are also offered for adults with hearing loss in the form of aural rehabilitation and auditory skills training through guidance and coaching of the client and the client's listening partners. Therapy sessions are individualized for the unique needs of the client.
Speech Starts HEAR offers individual virtual auditory, speech, language, and literacy therapy services with fun and engaging activities via a HIPAA compliant secure video service.
Speech Starts HEAR is currently providing tele-services to individuals in the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California.
Speech Starts HEAR offers auditory, speech, language, and literacy evaluations and articulation screenings through administration of a comprehensive battery of both formal and informal assessments. Assessments provide valuable information about a child's present levels of functioning in the areas of audition, receptive and expressive language, articulation, and pragmatics.
Evaluations are individualized and assessments are selected based on the needs of the client. The client receives a written evaluation report detailing results from the assessments, goals, recommendations, and a suggested treatment plan.
Speech Starts HEAR offers remote mentoring across the United States to professionals seeking their Listening and Spoken Language Specialist certification through the Alexander Graham Bell Academy.
Speech Starts HEAR Owner/Administrator, Melanie Abramowitz, M.S. CCC-SLP, LSLS cert. AVT is an ASHA certified speech-language pathologist, Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, and certified Auditory Verbal Therapist through the AG Bell Academy. Melanie provides mentoring to both AVT and AVEd candidates.

We understand the important role that hearing plays in the development of reading skills. We know the importance of phonological awareness intervention for individuals with hearing related disorders and strive to incorporate a literacy-based speech intervention approach during our auditory training sessions.

Auditory-verbal practice includes guidance, coaching, therapy, education, and advocacy with an emphasis on family involvement. The goal of auditory-verbal practice is for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to achieve the listening and spoken language skills needed to succeed in mainstream school programs and throughout their daily life. Auditory-verbal therapy is provided by a certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist in Auditory-Verbal Therapy (LSLS Cert. AVT) or by a certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist in Auditory-Verbal Education (LSLS Cert. AVEd).
